Why Is Kitui Silent? Supporters Say Kalonzo Musyoka Deserves Credit for Key Development Projects

The Fresh calls have emerged from a section of Kitui residents urging the community to openly acknowledge the development projects and opportunities they associate with former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka. Supporters argue that despite his long political career and influence in national government, many of his contributions are often overlooked or dismissed in public debate.

Those defending the Wiper Party leader point to several major infrastructure projects they credit to his lobbying and leadership, including the Kitui-Masinga Water Supply Project, Kiambere Water Project, Kanyonyoo-Syongila Road, Mwingi-Kamwongo Road, Kitui-Kibwezi Road, and the Mwingi-Garissa Road. They also cite initiatives such as the establishment of Konza Technopolis, the Thwake Dam Project, and the creation of new administrative districts from the former Kitui District as milestones that transformed service delivery across the region.

Supporters further maintain that Kalonzo played a key role in expanding government services by championing the creation of sub-counties, including ensuring that all wards in Mwingi North attained sub-county status. They also credit him with lobbying for the establishment of Tseikuru Technical Training Institute, which has since expanded access to technical and vocational education in the region.

Beyond infrastructure, admirers say Kalonzo used his influence to help many young people secure employment in the teaching service, disciplined forces and other government institutions at a time when, they argue, merit and recommendations opened doors for many without the need to pay bribes. They contend that numerous families in Kitui directly benefited from those opportunities.

The renewed appeal comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the 2027 General Election, with supporters calling on residents to celebrate what they describe as Kalonzo Musyoka’s legacy rather than focus solely on criticism. They argue that regardless of political differences, leaders should be judged on both their achievements and shortcomings, and that acknowledging development milestones is essential to preserving the county’s political history.
