Itangini–Ngoluni–Tawa Road: Makueni Residents Feel the Impact of Sh2.4 Billion Upgrade

Residents along the Itangini–Ngoluni–Tawa corridor in Makueni County are witnessing a major transformation of the road, following the ongoing national government-funded upgrade to bitumen standards.

The 31.5-kilometre project, which includes an access road to Kiteta Girls Secondary School, covers sections running through Ngoluni, Sofia, Mwaani, Muiu, Kaumoni and Itangini. Official project documents indicate that 18.82 kilometres involve new construction.

The national government has put the cost of the Tawa–Itangini project at about Sh2.4 billion, with President William Ruto highlighting the road among major infrastructure projects being implemented in Makueni.

For residents, the road is more than an infrastructure project. It connects communities, facilitates movement of farm produce, improves access to markets and services, and has the potential to change the economic activity of the surrounding areas.

The project has also attracted renewed public attention because the Ngoluni section was the scene of a fatal road crash in November 2025. The tragedy highlighted the importance of completing the road while ensuring appropriate road-safety measures along the busy corridor.

As political debates continue ahead of 2027, the development has also raised a broader question among residents: “Wewe utachagua maendeleo ama chama?”

The road’s construction is a national government project, with official records showing that implementation falls under the national roads agencies.
