On 20th May 2025 -Kitui County joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Bee Day, with a strong call to action for environmental conservation and pollinator protection. The event, held in Kinakoni, Kitui South Sub-County, was led by the County Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture, Jonathan Kyambi.
Speaking during the celebration themed “Bee Inspired by Nature to Nourish Us All,” Kyambi highlighted the critical role bees play in ensuring agricultural productivity, food security, and environmental sustainability.
“Bees are more than honey producers — they are essential pollinators that support biodiversity and sustain livelihoods, particularly in rural areas where small-scale farming dominates,” Kyambi said.
He warned that the continued decline in bee populations poses a serious threat to food systems and natural ecosystems. “Without bees, our ecosystems would falter and food insecurity would deepen, especially in regions like ours that heavily rely on agriculture,” he noted.
Kyambi called on residents and stakeholders to engage in bee-friendly practices such as planting flowering crops, avoiding harmful pesticides, and conserving natural habitats. “A world with bees is a world with food, balance, and resilience,” he said.
World Bee Day is observed annually on May 20 to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face, and their contribution to sustainable development.
