In a powerful show of solidarity and leadership, 19 Women Members of Parliament from across the country converged in Kitui South on Saturday to support area MP Dr. Rachael Kaki Nyamai in launching a landmark disbursement of over KSh 40 million aimed at empowering women and youth groups, while also unveiling a comprehensive campaign against gender-based violence (GBV).

The event, held in Ikutha, brought together top female legislators under the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) umbrella, signaling a strong united front on matters of gender equality, economic empowerment, and protection of vulnerable groups.

Among the notable leaders present were:

  • Deputy Speaker Hon. Gladys Boss Shollei
  • Kisii County Women Representative Hon. Jerusha Momanyi
  • Hon. Elizabeth Karemie (Tharaka Nithi)
  • Several other prominent MPs representing constituencies and counties from across Kenya.

The MPs joined Dr. Nyamai in disbursing:

  • KSh 4.2 million from the Uwezo Fund
  • KSh 358,699 from the Women Pamoja Fund
  • KSh 35 million from the NG-CDF

The funds are earmarked for boosting small-scale businesses, community welfare programs, and income-generating projects led by women and youth groups across Kitui South.

“This is what women leadership looks like in action — mobilizing resources, delivering impact, and standing together to protect and empower communities,” said Hon. Momanyi.

Aside from the financial empowerment initiative, the legislators jointly launched a constituency-wide campaign against GBV, pledging to work with local administrators, law enforcement, churches, and civil society to eradicate gender-based violence.

Deputy Speaker Hon. Shollei emphasized the national importance of the fight against GBV: “We are sending a clear message that violence against women and children has no place in our communities. Through unity and advocacy, we will achieve justice and safety for all.”

The presence of the 19 women MPs turned the event into a celebration of sisterhood, solidarity, and service. Residents praised their courage and commitment to change, with many women voicing hope that the unity shown would translate into real grassroots impact.

“This is not just about money. It’s about restoring dignity, building futures, and breaking cycles of poverty and violence,” said Dr. Nyamai.

The event marked a significant chapter in Kitui South’s development journey, showcasing how women leaders are transforming lives through collaboration, compassion, and courageous leadership.
