Matinyani Ward Member of the County Assembly (MCA) Hon. Sylvester Kitheka, popularly known as Yaamu, has launched a scathing attack on Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kelvin Kinengo, accusing him of holding the Assembly “hostage” on a day of great political significance for the Kamba community.
In a strongly worded statement, Yaamu condemned the convening of committee sittings in the Assembly on the same day that Wiper Party leader and former Vice President H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka is hosting national leaders at his Tseikuru home.
“This is pure madness,” Yaamu declared. “Kitui County Assembly, whose majority members belong to the Wiper Party, are today holding committee sittings when the entire nation is looking to Tseikuru. It is a big day for the Kamba community, and yet our own Assembly is acting in open defiance.”
The Matinyani MCA took particular aim at Speaker Kelvin Kinengo, accusing him of undermining the Wiper Party and its leadership. According to Yaamu, Speaker Kinengo, who once served as a Personal Assistant to Kalonzo Musyoka and hails from Tseikuru himself, was at the time chairing a Powers and Privileges Committee meeting — instead of facilitating MCAs’ participation in the Tseikuru event.
“To crown it with a middle finger to the Wiper Party Leader and Ukambani Kingpin, our Speaker Kelvin Kinengo is currently chairing a committee in pure defiance,” Yaamu added. “Akamba twaoiwe nuu kweli? [Are we really okay as a community?]”
The statement by Hon. Yaamu comes amid simmering tension within the Kitui County Assembly, where political allegiances and internal party loyalty continue to shape debates and actions. With Wiper enjoying majority support in the Assembly, the MCA’s remarks highlight deeper rifts between elected leaders and the party’s central command.
Efforts to reach Speaker Kinengo for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
