Healthcare services in Kitui South have received a significant boost following the launch of a renovated and fully equipped maternity theatre at Mutomo Mission Hospital, thanks to support from the M-PESA Foundation.
The upgraded facility was officially handed over on Thursday by Safaricom PLC’s Chief Corporate Security Officer, Nicholas Mulila, alongside Karen Basiye, Director of Sustainable Business, Social Impact, and M-PESA Foundation.
Speaking during the ceremony, Mulila reiterated Safaricom’s commitment to advancing healthcare access in rural communities.
“We are proud to partner with Mutomo Mission Hospital to ensure mothers and children in this region receive quality maternal care,” he said.
Karen Basiye emphasized that the initiative is part of the M-PESA Foundation’s broader agenda to improve maternal and child health across Kenya.
“Access to safe and modern maternity care should not be a privilege, but a basic right for every Kenyan,” she said.
Residents of Mutomo and the wider Kitui South region lauded the project, expressing gratitude to the M-PESA Foundation for its continued investment in community health and well-being.
The refurbished maternity unit is expected to play a vital role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates, while also easing the workload on healthcare providers. The modern facility will enable the hospital to manage both routine deliveries and emergency obstetric cases more efficiently.
Mutomo Mission Hospital, a longstanding healthcare pillar in the region, is now better equipped to serve mothers and newborns with dignity, safety, and care.
