Governor Malombe, World Vision Commission KShs. 840 Million Kangu Kangu Water Project in Kitui
Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe on Friday commissioned the River Athi–Kangu Kangu–Mutomo–Ikutha–Kanziko–Mathima Water Project at Mutomo Market, marking a historic milestone in Kitui’s pursuit of universal access to safe and clean water.
The flagship project, first conceptualized in 2014 through a partnership between the County Government of Kitui and World Vision Kenya, consists of a 224-kilometre pipeline, 13 storage tanks, and 52 water kiosks. Once fully operational, it will serve more than 100,000 residents across Kitui South and parts of Kitui Rural, reaching schools, health facilities, and major trading centres.
Constructed at a cost of KShs. 840 million, the scheme was jointly financed with the County Government contributing 51.45% and World Vision Kenya covering 48.55%.
Governor Malombe hailed the project as a direct response to the constitutional right to water, Kenya Vision 2030, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and Kitui’s development blueprint.
“My government is committed to ensuring access to safe and clean water for all Kitui households, with water points located not more than two kilometres away and a turnaround time of no more than 45 minutes,” he said.
He further cited complementary county efforts, including borehole drilling, sump wells, earth dams, and sand dams, while urging residents to safeguard the new infrastructure against vandalism. The project will be managed by the Kitui Water and Sanitation Company (KITWASCO) to ensure sustainability.
The Governor also directed the County Minister for Water and Irrigation to work closely with KITWASCO and local administrations in Lower Yatta, Mutomo, and Ikutha to curb rising cases of vandalism.
Meanwhile, World Vision Kenya officially announced its exit from Mutomo after 18 years of partnership, a period that saw life-transforming projects implemented across Kitui South.
Speaking during the event, Kitui South MP Dr. Racheal Nyamai commended President William Ruto for prioritizing key national infrastructure in the region, particularly the proposed tarmacking of the Ikutha–Kanziko–Mutha–Mutomo road. She said the road project, once implemented, would boost connectivity and stimulate economic growth.
Dr. Nyamai also welcomed other ongoing national government projects, including rural electrification, the construction of the Mutomo Modern Market, and the Mutha Market shade, describing them as life-changing interventions for local residents.
She lauded Governor Malombe and World Vision for the successful delivery of the Kangu Kangu water project, terming it a game changer for thousands of households who have struggled with perennial water scarcity.
“The collaboration between the county government, national government, and development partners like World Vision has brought real progress to our people. I am committed to continue working with President Ruto to ensure Kitui South residents benefit fully from such projects,” said Dr. Nyamai.
The commissioning ceremony not only marked the culmination of nearly two decades of World Vision’s work in Mutomo but also ushered in a new chapter of development partnerships aimed at transforming Kitui South.

Hon. Mark Nding’o Urges Government to Prioritize Knowledge Empowerment and Production Over Handouts
Yatta Kwa Vonza Member of the County Assembly, Hon. Mark Nding’o, has urged the national government to focus on empowering citizens through education, innovation, and hard work rather than promoting a culture of handouts.
Speaking during a public event in his ward, Hon. Nding’o said, “Empowering brains with knowledge plus hard work is the foundation to success.” He warned that handouts, though seemingly attractive, eventually cause long-term harm to society.
“Handouts are like Trojan horses that seem nice at first, only to learn later of their fraudulence and how much damage, turmoil, and suffering they cause,” he stated.
The MCA emphasized that sustainable development and poverty reduction can only be achieved through investment in key productive sectors.
“A nation that invests in production, manufacturing, and agriculture enhances poverty eradication and builds true economic independence,” he added.
Hon. Nding’o called on leaders at all levels to channel resources toward education, job creation, and agricultural productivity to empower citizens and drive Kenya toward lasting prosperity.
MP Makali Mulu Candidature Jolts Kitui as Senator Wambua Fights to Remain Relevant
Kitui County’s political landscape has been thrown into fresh turmoil following the renewed political momentum of Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu, whose gubernatorial ambitions continue to reshape alliances and rivalries ahead of the 2027 General Election. His growing influence and early campaigns have stirred intense debate across the county, placing pressure on key political players including Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua.
Dr. Makali Mulu, a seasoned legislator and economist, formally declared his interest in the Kitui gubernatorial seat, citing his leadership experience and expertise in planning and budgeting as key strengths for steering the county’s development agenda. His entry into the race has injected fresh energy into the contest and is widely viewed as a major factor in the ongoing political realignments within Kitui politics.
Political observers note that Mulu’s candidature has unsettled established power structures, with leaders now recalibrating strategies to remain relevant in the evolving contest. The move has particularly intensified competition among top leaders eyeing the county’s top seat, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown in the run-up to 2027.
Senator Enoch Wambua, who is also said to be considering a run for the governorship, now faces mounting pressure to solidify his political footing amid the shifting dynamics. Reports indicate that several senators across the country, including Wambua, are preparing gubernatorial bids, a development that has heightened political tensions between leaders and sparked new rivalries.
Analysts say the battle for influence between emerging and established figures could define the future political direction of Kitui County. With multiple heavyweights positioning themselves for the 2027 contest, residents are bracing for a fiercely competitive season that could reshape the county’s leadership and political alliances.

Kitui Governor Julius Malombe has strongly condemned the brutal killings that occurred in Kwa Kamari area of Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Sub-County, terming the attack “heinous, senseless, and unacceptable.”
In a press statement issued on April 27, 2026, the Governor expressed deep sorrow over the loss of seven lives following the Saturday daytime attack by suspected armed militia. The assailants reportedly targeted residents and businesses at Kwa Kamari trading centre, leaving behind destruction, fear, and displacement. Several shops, a petrol station, and a motorbike were destroyed, while even the local police station was not spared, with gunshots shattering its windows.
Malombe conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery to those injured, some of whom are receiving treatment at Mwingi Level IV Hospital. He assured affected families of the county government’s solidarity and support during this difficult time.
Preliminary findings indicate the violence may be linked to earlier inter-community tensions stemming from disputes between farmers and herders in March this year. However, the Governor emphasized that no grievance can justify such loss of innocent lives and destruction of livelihoods.
While reiterating that security is a function of the National Government, Malombe called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to apprehend those responsible. He welcomed the presence of senior security officials on the ground, including officers from the National Police Service and the General Service Unit, and urged residents to cooperate with ongoing investigations.
The Governor also renewed calls for immediate action to secure the volatile Kitui–Tana River border, including the eviction of illegal herders, charcoal burners, and suspected criminals from the Mwingi National Reserve. He appealed for coordinated operations involving agencies such as the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Kenya Forest Service.
A key concern raised in the statement was the delayed operationalization of several completed police stations along the border. Malombe noted that the county government has already constructed multiple stations, including the one at Kwa Kamari, and urged the National Government to urgently deploy officers and resources to make them fully functional.
“The safety and security of our people must never be compromised,” Malombe stated, stressing the need for enhanced security presence and faster response to emerging threats.
On the humanitarian front, the county has deployed medical teams to assist the injured and provide psychosocial support to affected families. Plans are also underway to determine further assistance for victims.
The Governor called for calm among residents, urging vigilance and cooperation with security agencies, while also committing to renewed peacebuilding efforts in collaboration with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission to address underlying tensions.
He concluded by calling for urgent, professional, and accountable action from all relevant agencies to end recurring insecurity along the border, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of Kitui residents.

Mp Nyamai Fires Back at Opposition, Defends Working with Ruto
Kitui South Member of Parliament Rachael Kaki Nyamai has sharply criticized the United Opposition led by Kalonzo Musyoka, accusing them of lacking a clear development agenda and focusing on “empty political rhetoric.”
Speaking in her constituency, the third-term legislator dismissed the opposition’s “Wantam” chants, arguing that they do not address the pressing needs of wananchi. Nyamai maintained that her priority remains delivering tangible development to the people of Kitui South.
The MP defended her decision to work with President William Ruto, saying collaboration with the national government is key to unlocking resources for projects such as electricity connectivity, road construction, and improved infrastructure.
“I respect Kalonzo Musyoka as our community leader, but I cannot join opposition politics that lack a clear agenda for our people,” Nyamai said. “My focus is on service delivery and development.”
Her remarks come days after Kalonzo held a political rally in Mutomo town, where he criticized Nyamai for aligning herself with President Ruto’s administration. The Wiper leader is reportedly backing a candidate to challenge Nyamai in the 2027 general election.
Despite the criticism, Nyamai reaffirmed her commitment to working with the national government, insisting that partnership—not political confrontation—is the fastest way to deliver meaningful development to Kitui South residents.
