Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament George Peter Kaluma has strongly condemned Pastor James Ng’ang’a of Neno Evangelism Church following the circulation of a viral video showing the preacher slapping a congregant during a church service.

The one-minute video, which has stirred outrage across social media platforms, captured the controversial pastor assaulting a worshipper in front of his congregation. The incident has prompted widespread condemnation from the public and leaders alike, calling for immediate legal action.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday evening, MP Kaluma urged the government to take stern action against Pastor Ng’ang’a, citing abuse of worshippers’ rights and the potential threat such behavior poses to the safety of religious followers.

“This is so bad! Kenya needs to prosecute and stop characters like Ng’ang’a, and to deregister ‘churches’ like Neno Evangelism, whose leader openly abuses worshipers, before we witness another Shakahola-type massacre,” Kaluma stated.

The outspoken legislator further demanded that the Neno Evangelism Church be deregistered, warning that inaction could open doors to religious extremism and cult-like behavior similar to the Shakahola tragedy, which claimed hundreds of lives in Kilifi County.

Pastor Ng’ang’a, who has previously made headlines for his controversial sermons and erratic behavior, has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Law enforcement agencies are yet to confirm whether investigations into the assault have been launched.

The call by Kaluma adds pressure on religious regulatory bodies and law enforcement to act swiftly to ensure that places of worship remain safe and that leaders are held accountable for any form of abuse.
