Mulango Gets Water Relief as Malombe Commissions KSh 10.5M Yambuu Project

The Residents of Mulango Ward are set to benefit from improved access to clean water following the commissioning of the Yambuu Sumpwell Water Supply Project in Kathungi by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe. The project is expected to significantly ease long-standing water challenges in the area.

Implemented during the 2023/2024 financial year at a cost of KSh 10.5 million, the water scheme draws from the Yambuu Sumpwell, which has a capacity of abstracting 15 cubic metres of water per hour. The system is designed to strengthen reliability of supply to surrounding communities.

The project comprises a complete pumping system, distribution pipelines, storage tanks, and three water-drawing points strategically located to serve residents. It is already connected to existing kiosks at Kyumoni, Kathungi Market, and Mithongo, improving distribution efficiency across the ward.

According to project details, the system currently supports 53 household connections, with capacity to expand and serve up to 120 households as more residents link onto the network. Officials say this expansion potential will further reduce water scarcity and improve daily livelihoods.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Malombe reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding access to safe and reliable water, noting its importance in boosting health, education, and local economic activities. He was accompanied by Water Minister Peter Gitonga, Chief Officer Nathan Vungo, and Mulango MCA Mwanza Kitonyo, who urged residents to safeguard the infrastructure for long-term benefit.
