Kitui East is witnessing renewed political momentum following a high-attendance community forum convened by grassroots mobilizer Sammy Mutea at his rural home in Zombe–Kasunguni over the weekend.
The meeting, described by organizers as a “come together” forum, drew more than 1,000 residents from two villages, alongside youth representatives, women leaders and religious figures. Among those present were Bishop Peter Mwangangi, Bishop Mburia of Maximum Miracle Centre, Rev. Malii of Breath of Life Church, and Rev. Kithung’a of AIC Zombe Parish. Also in attendance were former Sombe/Mwitika MCA Hon. Mwathi Katheke, Univision Sacco Director Mr. Tony Mwalimu, Kitui County KUPPET JSS Secretary Mr. Mbondo, former KEPSHA Chair Mr. Mwanzia, and Mr. Makwele, National Deputy Chairman of the Aombe Clan.
The highlight of the gathering was the public endorsement of Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu for the Kitui gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election. The declaration signals early political realignments in Kitui East and could influence broader county dynamics as succession politics gradually intensify.

Mutea, who has in recent months organized youth football tournaments across Kitui East, has steadily built a reputation as a mobilizer at the grassroots level. The sports initiatives attracted hundreds of young people and strengthened his profile among local youth networks. Around the same period, he reportedly undertook advanced security training abroad focused on combating public theft, further broadening his public image beyond community organizing.
Addressing attendees, Mutea emphasized unity and development, maintaining that his efforts are centered on community service rather than personal political ambition.
“Let’s have unity of purpose,” he told the crowd.
Political observers in Kitui East note that Mutea’s activities appear deliberate and well-structured, sparking debate about his long-term intentions. While some view him as positioning himself as a potential kingmaker in 2027, others speculate he could be laying the groundwork for a future elective bid.
As the 2027 political season slowly begins to take shape, attention now turns to how emerging alliances and endorsements will reshape the county’s political landscape.
