Kitui West politics could be in for a major shake-up in 2027 following strong sentiments for change expressed by upcoming leader Liz Mwathe during a fundraiser for AIC Kaluluini in Kyaani on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Mwathe underscored the need for a leadership transition that would inject fresh ideas, new energy, and stronger national networks to benefit the constituency and recalibrate representation in the National Assembly.

The budding politician, who appears to have quietly gained the backing of influential local figures—judging by the high turnout and overwhelming contributions channeled through her—stressed the importance of having a representative with strong mobilization skills and a wide network.

Citing Mwingi West as an example, she questioned why Kitui West leaders rarely rally friends, colleagues, and even political rivals to pool resources for development projects.

“Doesn’t our leadership have friends or networks we can leverage on for the sake of our people?” she posed.

Political observers believe Ms. Mwathe could pose the most formidable challenge yet to incumbent MP Edith Nyenze, especially with her rising popularity among women voters and the youth. One voter was quoted saying, “Only a fellow woman can unseat the current MP… With Liz in the race, Hon. Nyenze may have to find a new niche to defend her seat.”

With Gen Z voters increasingly inclined towards change and fresh leadership, analysts predict a highly competitive race. The event was also attended by local MCA Hon. Paul Maluki, Hon. Edith Nyenze, and other prominent figures.
