A political storm is brewing in Mwingi Central as multiple opinion polls show CPA John Makau gaining significant traction ahead of the 2027 general elections. The polls suggest that Makau, a close ally of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, is poised to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Gideon Mulyungi in 2027.
Makau’s growing popularity has been fueled by widespread grassroots support. Key segments of the electorate — including Boda Boda operators, small-scale traders (Mama Boga), business owners, and professionals — have rallied behind his bid, citing his accessibility and development-focused agenda.
Residents say Makau’s consistent engagement with the public and alignment with local leadership structures have endeared him to the electorate. “Makau listens to us. He comes to the ground and interacts with everyone, unlike Mulyungi who appears detached from the realities facing common wananchi,” said a resident in Mwingi town.
Hon. Mulyungi, who is serving his second term, is reportedly losing touch with the electorate due to what critics describe as a lack of cooperation with fellow elected leaders and dwindling development efforts. Some political observers argue that his increasingly isolated stance has weakened his base as local dynamics shift.
A local political analyst noted, “The writing is on the wall. The ground is visibly shifting. If elections were held today, Makau would likely emerge victorious.”
As the 2027 polls draw closer, the race for Mwingi Central is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested in Kitui County, with CPA John Makau emerging as a strong contender determined to bring new leadership and direction to the constituency.
