President William Ruto has revealed that he reached out to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka immediately after the 2022 General Election, even before contacting ODM leader Raila Odinga. Speaking during a public forum, Ruto said he made the offer in a spirit of national unity and inclusivity but Kalonzo turned it down.
“I called Kalonzo before I even reached out to Raila. I asked him to work with me in building the country, but he declined,” Ruto said. He added that his decision to approach Kalonzo first was a show of respect for his leadership and experience in national politics.
The President expressed disappointment that Kalonzo rejected the offer, saying it was a missed opportunity for both the country and the people of Ukambani. He, however, affirmed that his administration is still open to working with all leaders regardless of political affiliation.
Kalonzo, a principal in the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya coalition, has remained steadfast in opposition ranks and is considered a likely contender in the 2027 presidential race. He has yet to publicly respond to the President’s remarks.
