Kitui County’s urban renaissance is firmly on track as Kitui and Mwingi towns emerge as shining examples of transformation, thanks to the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development under the stewardship of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe.
The county has been feted for its outstanding performance in urban development, earning accolades and commendations for a string of impactful projects that have dramatically improved the urban experience for residents and traders alike.
Streets are now well-lit with modern streetlights, roads are being paved with cabro blocks, and proper stormwater drainage systems have been installed—bringing both aesthetic value and critical infrastructure solutions to previously neglected areas.
The Ministry’s achievements were recently celebrated following recognition from national bodies and development partners, affirming the county’s growing reputation as a model for urban transformation in devolved units.
“Our towns are no longer dusty outposts—they are becoming organized, well-planned spaces where business, movement, and life thrive,” said Frederick Kimanga, CECM for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development. “This is development with dignity and vision.”
In Kitui town, strategic upgrades to the central business district have given new life to trading corridors, improved traffic flow, and created safer environments for pedestrians and vendors. In Mwingi, similar improvements have made the town cleaner, more accessible, and ready for further expansion as a regional commercial hub.
The Ministry’s focus on community-centered planning, transparency, and use of local labor continues to fuel support among residents, who have welcomed the visible improvements with enthusiasm.
“This level of progress is unprecedented,” noted Evans Mutemi, Chief Officer for Urban Development. “We are not only modernizing our towns but also building public confidence in government service delivery.”
With projects like the Kiusyani Market Dustless Project, smart lighting, roadworks, and planned green spaces now in place or underway, Kitui’s urban future looks promising. The Ministry’s work aligns tightly with Governor Malombe’s 16-point agenda, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, public health, and inclusive development.
As Kitui and Mwingi continue to evolve into clean, efficient, and economically active towns, one message resounds throughout the county:
The Future is Urban—and it is already here.
