Kasipul Member of Parliament Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot dead along Ngong Road in Nairobi, just days after reportedly expressing fears for his life. The brazen attack occurred on the evening of April 30, with witnesses reporting that the MP was ambushed by unknown assailants on a motorcycle.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and police have launched investigations into the incident.
Hon. Were, who was elected on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket, had earlier in February publicly voiced concerns over his safety, citing a pattern of threats and attacks. He accused political rivals of orchestrating violence against him and urged authorities to act before it was too late.
ODM has condemned the assassination as a national tragedy. Mombasa Governor and ODM Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Nassir called for swift justice and warned against normalizing political violence. “We must not normalize this violence,” he said.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described Were as a fearless and principled leader, emphasizing that the perpetrators must face the full force of the law.
Hon. Were was serving his second term in Parliament and was known for his vocal stance on issues affecting his constituents.
May he rest in peace.
