Thousands of teachers from across Kitui County converged at the Kitui Multipurpose Development & Training Institute for the first Annual General Meeting and Conference organized by the Kenya Primary School Headteachers Association (KEPSHA) – Kitui County chapter.
The event, themed “Enhancing Competency Based Education Effectiveness in Kitui County through Transformative Leadership for Sustainable Development,” brought together educators, education stakeholders, and union leaders to deliberate on the future of learning and leadership in the county.
Addressing the gathering, Kitui KNUT Secretary General Mr. Simon Mutunga Nding’o delivered a bold political statement, declaring that teachers across the county are ready to play a decisive role in the 2027 general election.
“We are watching closely. Come 2027, teachers will scrutinize every gubernatorial candidate, and we will collectively endorse a leader who understands and respects the teaching fraternity,” said Mr. Nding’o to resounding applause.
He added that the teaching profession has for too long been sidelined in matters of county leadership, despite its crucial role in shaping society. He emphasized that going forward, teachers would leverage their numbers, influence, and networks to ensure the next Governor of Kitui County is someone who has a clear agenda for education and a good rapport with educators.
The conference also featured panels on leadership, CBC implementation, and teacher welfare, underscoring the role of school heads in shaping not just education outcomes, but also local development.
With over 12,000 teachers in Kitui County, the message from the KEPSHA conference was clear: “We will determine the next Governor of Kitui.”
