Leaders and residents gathered at Nyuani Primary School in Mutonguni Ward, Kitui West Sub-County, to commemorate International Women’s Day under the theme “Give to Gain,” a message emphasizing that investing in women and girls strengthens families, communities, and economic growth.
The event was attended by several leaders including Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, County Commissioner Erastus Mbui, MPs Dr. Irene Kasalu and Edith Nyenze, as well as Ben Muasya, a Commissioner at the Commission on Revenue Allocation. A section of Members of the County Assembly and members of the county cabinet were also present.
During the celebrations, Kitui Woman Representative and gubernatorial aspirant Dr. Irene Kasalu praised women for their vital role in society, noting their contributions to family stability, community development, and leadership in both county and national governments.
In a gesture aimed at promoting girls’ education, Dr. Kasalu sponsored the secondary school education of a needy girl from Nyuani Primary School who had been unable to report to school due to financial challenges. She said empowering girls through education remains key to achieving sustainable development.
“Women are the backbone of families and they deserve to be celebrated,” Dr. Kasalu said, urging leaders and communities to continue supporting women and girls through education and equal opportunities.
The event also brought together county officials, Members of the County Assembly, and women representative aspirants Fridah Makasi and Rhoda Kithuku, among other leaders.
Dr. Kasalu is among leaders who have expressed interest in the Kitui gubernatorial race in 2027, where she is positioning herself as an advocate for women empowerment and education in the county.
