Azimio Affiliate Parties Protest Alleged Appointment of Kalonzo Musyoka as Coalition Leader

A section of political parties affiliated to the Azimio la Umoja coalition has protested the alleged appointment of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s leader, terming the move unprocedural and illegitimate.

In a statement released on Monday, the leader of the National Liberal Party, speaking on behalf of more than 20 constituent parties within Azimio, questioned the process through which the decision was allegedly made. The parties demanded clarity on who appointed Kalonzo Musyoka, which meeting sanctioned the decision, who convened that meeting, and who was in attendance.

They emphasized that Azimio is a coalition made up of over 20 independent political parties, all of which must be consulted and involved in any major decisions, including leadership appointments. According to the statement, any such decision must be transparent, inclusive, and formally ratified by all coalition partners.

“In the absence of transparency, inclusivity, and formal ratification by all coalition partners, this purported appointment is procedurally flawed, illegitimate, and therefore null and void,” the statement read, while noting that the protest was not personal and bore no offence to Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka.

The protesting parties have now called for an urgent consultative meeting of all Azimio affiliates to address the leadership structure of the coalition and agree on a clear, lawful process for decision-making going forward.
