Yatta Kwa Vonza MCA Hon. Mark Nding’o has urged the national government to increase capitation to public schools, warning that the current allocation is inadequate to sustain learning amid the prevailing tough economic conditions. He said rising prices of food, utilities, and learning materials have overstretched school budgets, placing an additional burden on parents and administrators.

Speaking exclusively with Local Media, the MCA noted that many schools are struggling to meet basic operational costs, a situation that risks disrupting learning. He emphasized that enhanced capitation would help schools maintain standards, support co-curricular activities, and ensure a conducive learning environment for pupils and students.

Hon. Nding’o also called on the government to set aside dedicated funds for school feeding programmes, particularly in regions that received poor rainfall and are experiencing food shortages. He observed that hunger remains a major challenge in arid and semi-arid areas, affecting learners’ attendance and academic performance.

The MCA stressed that a well-fed learner is more likely to concentrate and perform better in class, adding that school meals also encourage retention, especially among children from vulnerable households. He urged relevant ministries to work closely with county governments to roll out sustainable feeding initiatives in affected areas.

He concluded by appealing to policymakers to prioritize education and food security, noting that investing in children’s welfare is an investment in the country’s future. Hon. Nding’O said timely intervention would cushion learners from the harsh economic realities and safeguard their right to quality education.
