Kauwi Sub-County Hospital in Kitui West has received medical equipment worth KSh 14.4million from the MPESA Foundation in a major boost to healthcare delivery in the region. The handover ceremony held on 14th November 2025 marked a significant milestone in efforts to enhance health services for thousands of residents who rely on the facility for essential care.

The event was graced by Nicholas Mulila, a senior official from the Safaricom and MPESA Foundation, who led the delegation from the organisation. Mulila reaffirmed the foundation’s long-standing commitment to strengthening health systems across the country and emphasized that improving community health remains at the heart of their corporate social investments.

County officials noted that the donation comes at a crucial moment, as the Kitui County Government intensifies measures to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC). They highlighted that the equipment will greatly improve the hospital’s ability to provide quality healthcare in line with Article 43 of the Constitution, which guarantees every Kenyan the right to the highest attainable standard of health.

According to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the newly donated equipment will support key units including maternal and child health, outpatient, inpatient, laboratory, and emergency departments. This enhancement is expected to not only expand service delivery but also reduce the burden of referrals to the Kitui County Referral Hospital.

The presence of the MPESA Foundation at the event underscored the importance of public–private partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals. Mulila applauded the collaborative spirit between the county government and the private sector, noting that such partnerships play a vital role in strengthening community health outcomes.

County health officials expressed deep appreciation to the MPESA Foundation for what they termed as a “timely and transformative contribution.” They further commended the organization for consistently supporting health initiatives across Kenya, particularly in underserved areas.

The County Government assured residents that the equipment would be properly safeguarded, maintained, and utilized to its full capacity. Officials added that trained health personnel had already been deployed to the facility, with systems being established to ensure continuous, high-quality service delivery.

Residents of Kitui West were also encouraged to take ownership of the facility by supporting its operations and using the services responsibly. Leaders stressed that the hospital belongs to the community and urged locals to help preserve the equipment for the greater good.

Mulila, in his remarks, praised the progress made by the county’s health sector and called for continued collaboration to ensure long-term sustainability. He reiterated that the MPESA Foundation remains committed to empowering communities through health, education, and economic empowerment programs.

The ceremony ended with a shared commitment between the county government and the MPESA Foundation to continue working together toward a healthier and more resilient Kitui County. Leaders thanked the foundation for its generosity and expressed optimism that the upgraded Kauwi Sub-County Hospital will greatly improve the wellbeing of residents in the region.
