The Ministry of Health and Sanitation, in partnership with Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH) and Charity: Water, has officially handed over the completed Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Project to the Sombe–Mwitika community in Kitui East Sub-County.

The transformative project features nine fully operational water kiosks that will supply clean, reliable water to more than 850 households. In addition, four schools in the area have received newly constructed sanitation blocks, each equipped with two toilets and changing rooms, greatly improving hygiene standards for students.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Faith Kanini Mutinda, Deputy Director of Public Health representing County Executive Lyn Kitwan, hailed the project as a major milestone in the county’s journey toward universal access to safe water and sanitation.

She noted that the initiative will not only help curb waterborne diseases but will also ease the burden for families who previously walked long distances to access water.

Local leaders and residents expressed gratitude to WHH, Charity: Water, and the Ministry of Health for what they described as a “life-changing investment.” They highlighted the significant benefits the project brings, including improved community health, enhanced learning environments, and greater convenience for households.

The project marks a crucial step in advancing water security and public health in the Sombe–Mwitika area, with community members optimistic that it will spur social and economic growth in the region.
