Kitui South Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Racheal Kaki, on Friday joined Energy Cabinet Secretary Hon. Opiyo Wandayi in flagging off and commissioning new rural electrification projects in the constituency, signaling a major step forward in efforts to boost access to electricity in the region.

The high-profile event, held at Mutha Secondary School in Mutha Ward, marked the rollout of key electricity initiatives under the national government’s Last Mile Connectivity Program. The program aims to extend power to underserved areas, including rural schools, health facilities, and households.

During the event, Hon. Kaki reiterated her unwavering commitment to collaborate with President William Ruto’s administration to deliver tangible development to Kitui South. She emphasized that access to electricity will not only enhance education and improve healthcare delivery but will also promote local economic empowerment through agro-processing and small business growth.

CS Wandayi echoed these sentiments, highlighting the national scope of the electrification campaign and its transformative impact on marginalized regions. “Rural electrification is not a luxury—it is a right. We are lighting up homes, schools, and livelihoods across the country,” he said.

However, the celebrations were tempered by ongoing security concerns in Mutha and parts of Kitui East. The region has in recent months witnessed violent incidents, including fatal clashes between residents and armed herders. Despite these challenges, residents continue to live without reliable electricity—underscoring the urgency of the newly launched projects.

CS Wandayi acknowledged the security situation, noting that development and security go hand in hand. “Bringing power to these regions is part of a broader government strategy to stabilize and develop historically neglected areas,” he added.

The event symbolized hope for a better future, with residents expressing optimism that power connectivity will bring more light—both literally and figuratively—to their communities.
