Incoming Machakos Governor Hon. Waita Nzioka on Wednesday visited several public schools in Wamunyu Ward, Mwala Sub-county, as part of the annual Reading Road Rally organized by Kenya Connect, a local NGO dedicated to improving literacy and education outcomes in rural areas.

Speaking during the visit, Hon. Nzioka emphasized the importance of literacy in shaping the county’s future. “I witnessed firsthand how learners are engaging with books as the foundation of their education. Their enthusiasm was both uplifting and a strong reminder that the future of education in Machakos needs urgent, focused attention,” he said.

The Reading Road Rally is a flagship program by Kenya Connect aimed at promoting reading culture among primary school pupils in remote areas. The initiative includes interactive storytelling sessions, book donations, and the integration of digital learning tools.

Hon. Nzioka toured various literacy and technology programs supported by Kenya Connect, including ICT and robotics projects being implemented in underserved schools. He expressed admiration for the organization’s efforts, led by co-founder Mr. James Musyoka, praising their impact in transforming rural education through grassroots partnerships.

“The work being done here proves that when local communities are empowered, education outcomes drastically improve. This is the kind of innovation and commitment we need to replicate across Machakos,” Nzioka added.

The visit is seen as a clear signal of his priority for education reform ahead of the 2027 general elections under the #Masakumbee2027 banner.
