In response to the devastating drought that wiped out thousands of livestock across Kitui County, the State Department for Livestock has launched a large-scale goat restocking program aimed at restoring livelihoods among vulnerable households.
Each of the county’s constituencies is set to receive 495 goats, with 99 carefully selected vulnerable households getting five goats each as part of the initiative. The program is seen as a critical step toward helping residents rebuild their herds and recover from the economic shock caused by prolonged drought.
The distribution exercise officially kicked off today in Mwingi West constituency, where it was led by Mr. Patrick Ngere on behalf of Livestock Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke. Speaking during the event, Mr. Ngere emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting livestock farmers and restoring food security in arid and semi-arid regions like Kitui.
“The Ministry is prioritizing programs that restore resilience and dignity to our people. These goats will not only provide food and income but also help families restabilize,” Mr. Ngere said.
PS Jonathan Mueke, through a statement, praised the initiative as timely and impactful. “This restocking program is part of our broader commitment to cushion affected communities and enhance pastoral livelihoods across the country,” Mueke said.
Residents of Mwingi West welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the restocking program will help them get back on their feet after months of hardship.
The distribution is expected to roll out across the remaining constituencies in the coming days.
