Kitui County will officially host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, a major national event set to elevate the region’s prominence and accelerate development.
Speaking during a high-level meeting with Kitui County leadership led by Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich confirmed the government’s commitment to making the event a success. He announced that preparations are in full swing ahead of the October 20th celebrations.
In a significant boost, the government has allocated Sh800 million for the transformation of Ithookwe Showground into a 10,000-seater international-standard stadium. The state-of-the-art facility is expected to be completed before Mashujaa Day and will remain a legacy project for sports, youth activities, and community events in the county.
“This investment is not only about the upcoming national celebrations—it’s about positioning Kitui for long-term socio-economic growth,” said Rotich.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, during a recent tour of the county, emphasized that the stadium project serves a dual purpose: facilitating this year’s Mashujaa Day and establishing a permanent high-standard sporting facility in Kitui.
Governor Malombe welcomed the development, terming it a game-changer for the county. “This will spotlight Kitui on the national stage, catalyze investments, create jobs, and boost the local economy,” he said.
The stadium upgrade will be accompanied by complementary infrastructure improvements, including the facelifting of Ithookwe Airstrip, upgrading of key access roads, and construction of a mini State Lodge. The event is also expected to significantly benefit the hospitality and transport sectors, with increased demand anticipated during the festivities.
With these developments, Kitui stands to not only host a historic national event but also emerge stronger with modern infrastructure and renewed economic potential.
