The highly anticipated Kitui Agricultural Show & Trade Fair, initially scheduled for July this year, has been postponed to February 2026. The announcement was made earlier today by Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Hon. Mbaya Kimwele.

Addressing the media, Kimwele explained that the rescheduling was necessitated by ongoing renovation works at the historic Ithookwe Showgrounds. The site is currently undergoing a major facelift aimed at transforming it into a modern international-standard stadium.

“This is not a cancellation of the Agricultural Show & Trade Fair but a strategic delay,” said Kimwele. “The renovation works at Ithookwe Showgrounds are part of a broader initiative to position Kitui as a hub for regional events and economic growth.”

The CECM noted that the national government, in collaboration with the Kitui County Government, is spearheading the revamp of the iconic showgrounds to attract both national and international events.

He reassured residents that the delay will ultimately enhance the quality and impact of the event. “It also gives us enough time to prepare and make the event even better. February is an ideal month because most farmers will have completed harvesting,” he added.

In the meantime, Kimwele called on farmers across the county to adopt modern farming methods and embrace Climate Smart Agriculture. He stressed the importance of resilience in farming practices, especially in light of the challenges posed by climate change.

“Climate change is here with us. We must farm wisely to feed our families and secure our livelihoods. It is time for our farmers to innovate,” he said.

The CECM urged local farmers to focus on integrated farming systems and cultivate drought-resistant crops such as sorghum, millet, green grams, and cowpeas to boost food security and income.

The rescheduled Agricultural Show & Trade Fair is expected to be bigger and better, showcasing the latest in agricultural innovations, technologies, and investment opportunities for the people of Kitui and the wider region.
