Kenya has secured a prestigious seat on the United Nations Tourism Executive Council following a highly competitive election held during the ongoing UN Tourism Commission for Africa meeting in Abuja, Nigeria. The Executive Council is the second-highest decision-making body within the UN Tourism framework, coming after the General Assembly.

The successful bid is a major diplomatic win for the country and is expected to strengthen Kenya’s influence in shaping global tourism policy and advancing the continent’s tourism agenda.

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Hon. Rebecca Miano led Kenya’s delegation, with strong backing from senior government officials, including the Tourism Fund Director Mr. Patrick Muthengi Ngere. Their spirited campaign, anchored on Kenya’s strategic vision for sustainable tourism and regional cooperation, received widespread support from member states.

Speaking after the announcement, CS Miano expressed her gratitude to African member states for their confidence in Kenya.

“This win is not just for Kenya; it is for Africa. It shows that our collective voice matters in global tourism governance. We are committed to championing policies that promote sustainable tourism, community empowerment, and economic resilience,” she said.

Mr. Muthengi Ngere lauded the tireless efforts of the Kenyan delegation, highlighting the role of strategic partnerships and lobbying in securing the seat.

Kenya’s tenure on the Executive Council is expected to span four years, during which it will actively participate in policy formulation, strategic planning, and oversight of the UN Tourism’s operations globally.

The UN Tourism Executive Council plays a critical role in steering the global tourism agenda, especially as the world recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and faces new challenges related to climate change and geopolitical instability.

Kenya’s election to the Council is seen as recognition of its robust tourism sector, rich cultural heritage, and leadership in sustainable and wildlife tourism.
