Kitui East is experiencing fresh political tremors as former Ambassador Kiema Kilonzo is being urged by area leaders to vie for the parliamentary seat in the 2027 general elections. The move comes amid growing discontent with the incumbent MP, Hon. Nimrod Mbai, whose political grip on the constituency appears increasingly shaky.
Leaders and opinion shapers from the region have reportedly thrown their weight behind Amb. Kilonzo, who is yet to officially declare his political intentions. The former diplomat, known for his influential roles both locally and internationally, has been holding consultative meetings across the constituency and wider Kitui County.
Speaking recently, Amb. Kilonzo confirmed he is still “listening to the ground” and has not ruled out a return to elective politics. “I have heard the calls from the people, but I will continue engaging with residents before making any announcement,” he said.
Political analysts see his potential candidacy as a major shake-up for the Kitui East race, with many predicting a fierce battle should he decide to run.
The 2027 race in Kitui East is already shaping up to be one of the most watched in Kitui County, with Amb. Kilonzo’s possible entry expected to redefine the local political landscape.
