The Kitui County Ministry of Health and Sanitation has enhanced its renal care services with the acquisition of two new hemodialysis machines, each worth KES 2.3 million. These machines bring the total number at the county facility to seven, significantly increasing the renal unit’s capacity to deliver life-saving dialysis services to patients with kidney-related illnesses.

In a major step toward expanding specialized healthcare, the county is also constructing a fully-fledged regional renal unit, set to serve as a referral center for the South Eastern Kenya Economic Bloc (SEKEB). Upon completion, the facility will cater to patients from Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Garissa, and Tana River counties.

Demand for dialysis services in Kitui has surged in recent years. In 2022, the renal unit served an average of 339 dialysis patients per month, a figure that more than doubled to 672 patients per month in 2024. This sharp rise highlights the increasing prevalence of kidney disease and underscores the urgent need for accessible and expanded renal care.

“We now have a total of seven dialysis machines, which means more patients can be served without delays,” said Chief Officer for Drugs and Medical Supplies, Aggrey Kamba. “The construction of the regional renal unit marks a major milestone in our journey to decentralize specialized healthcare. We’re not only serving Kitui residents but also strengthening regional health systems across SEKEB,” he added.

This initiative aligns with Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s broader development agenda aimed at enhancing access to quality healthcare and minimizing the need for patient referrals to distant facilities.
