The Kitui County Assembly has officially kicked off a week-long County Inspection Tour aimed at assessing the state of public facilities across various sub-counties. The exercise began today in Kitui Central, Kitui South, and Kitui East, with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) keen to evaluate infrastructure and service delivery in the health and administrative sectors.

Led by the Majority Leader Hon. Harrison Maluki (Migwani) and Yatta kwa vonza MCA hon Mark Ndingo and a section of MCAs visited Kitui County Referral Hospital. The inspection focused on the availability of essential medical supplies, particularly drugs. While members noted notable improvements since the last visit, they expressed concern that the supply of drugs and other medical materials remains inadequate to meet the hospital’s capacity. The facility’s Medical Superintendent, Mr. Mungai John, urged the Assembly to consider increasing the health ministry’s budget to enhance service delivery.

In Kyangwithya East Ward, the team inspected Museve Dispensary and found that the facility is heavily understaffed, with only one nurse attending to more than 50 patients daily. They also flagged the lack of enough ambulatory blocks and a backup generator, which poses a challenge during power outages.

The inspection team proceeded to Ikanga Level IV Hospital in Kitui South, where they encountered a range of infrastructural challenges. These include a leaking roof, broken drainage system, pothole-ridden floors, cramped office spaces, dilapidated latrines, and the absence of a perimeter fence—posing a security risk. The hospital’s management appealed for the urgent completion of a stalled mortuary project and requested increased funding to support operations.

In more positive news, the MCAs visited the Ward Administrator’s office in Ikanga/Kyatune Ward and confirmed that the facility has been completed and is already in use.

The County Assembly’s inspection tour is set to continue tomorrow in other sub-counties, as members push for improved service delivery and accountability across Kitui County.
