The Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development in Kitui County is receiving widespread praise from residents following the successful implementation of a street lighting project across the Kitui and Mwingi Central Business Districts (CBDs).

The initiative, spearheaded under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, is part of a broader strategy to modernize urban areas, enhance security, and stimulate economic activity. Through the efforts of the Kitui Municipal department, key streets in both towns have been illuminated, transforming the nighttime atmosphere and allowing businesses—particularly those run by hawkers and small-scale traders—to operate beyond daylight hours.

During a recent visit to various parts of the Kitui CBD, members of the TCD Digital team reported a vibrant and energized trading environment, with well-lit streets encouraging increased foot traffic and late-night commerce.

“We are now able to work until late without fear. The lights have made the town safer and more welcoming,” said a hawker near the Kalundu area.

Similar sentiments were echoed in Mwingi CBD, where traders expressed gratitude for the county government’s focus on urban infrastructure and public safety. Many described the street lighting as a “game changer” that is not only improving their livelihoods but also contributing to a cleaner and more business-friendly environment.

We congratulate the team led by Waziri Fredrick Kimanga, CO Evans Mutem and Municipal Managers Irene and Alex.

Residents have commended Governor Malombe for his continued commitment to transforming Kitui’s urban centers into modern, secure, and economically vibrant spaces.

The lighting project stands as a key milestone in the county’s urban development agenda and sets a promising precedent for further infrastructural advancements across Kitui County.
