A bizarre and dramatic scene unfolded in Mombasa over the weekend when two Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Machakos County exchanged blows in a heated altercation reportedly triggered by romantic rivalry involving a fellow female MCA.
The two male legislators, whose identities have been withheld for now, are currently nursing injuries after what witnesses described as a “free-for-all boxing and taekwondo-style” confrontation erupted at a popular beachside hotel. The unexpected fight reportedly began when one of the MCAs boasted about his relationship with the female colleague, claiming that she would be “emptying the sack in his central government,” a coded phrase that allegedly triggered the scuffle.
Unbeknownst to the duo, they had both been vying for the same lady’s attention. One was said to be casually munching groundnuts in preparation for what he hoped would be a night of ‘electric supply,’ when he overheard the boast. Enraged, he shouted in his native Kamba dialect, “MCA ucio ni mumbe nesa, nani mwendwa wakwa!” (That MCA is well-fed, and she is my lover!)
What followed can only be described as a clash of egos and fists. The two leaders reportedly unleashed a flurry of punches akin to Tanzanian boxing legend Madonga “MTU KAZI”, drawing attention from hotel staff, guests, and fellow dignitaries attending a county leaders’ retreat.
Security intervened minutes later, separating the feuding lawmakers, who were both left with bruises and torn clothing. They were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The Machakos County Assembly leadership has yet to issue an official statement, but sources indicate that disciplinary action may be taken against the two.
A senior Assembly official, speaking anonymously, expressed disappointment: “We expect our leaders to uphold dignity and decorum, especially in public. This was embarrassing and unfortunate.”
As the dust settles, Kenyans online have reacted with both humor and disbelief, with the trending phrase “Yetu Macho Tu” summing up the public’s reaction to what many have dubbed “the love triangle brawl.”
