Sunflower farming is proving to be a viable agricultural venture in Kitui County, as farmers embrace the crop for its economic and environmental benefits. One such farmer like Musyenda from Voo/Kyamatu Ward, has successfully harvested 400 kilograms of sunflower seeds, marking a significant milestone in the county’s agricultural sector.

The sunflower seeds were supplied by the County Ministry of Agriculture as part of an initiative to promote sustainable farming and boost local farmers’ incomes. With the harvest now complete, Musyenda plans to press the seeds for oil production, tapping into the multiple benefits of sunflowers. Beyond oil extraction, sunflower by-products can be used for animal feed, soil enrichment, and as a fiber source for various industries.

“The sunflower plant is incredibly versatile. Apart from producing high-quality oil, its by-products are useful for livestock and can enhance soil fertility. This initiative is opening up new income opportunities for us farmers,” Musyenda remarked.

The County Government of Kitui has been actively supporting sunflower farming as part of broader efforts to diversify agricultural production and promote value addition. Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture have emphasized that sunflower farming is well-suited to Kitui’s climate and has the potential to improve food security while boosting the local economy.

“We are encouraging more farmers to take up sunflower cultivation. It is a drought-resistant crop, and its multiple uses ensure that farmers can earn from it in various ways. We will continue providing the necessary support to make this initiative a success,” said a representative from the Ministry.

With more farmers expressing interest in sunflower cultivation, the future looks promising for Kitui County’s agricultural sector. The success of pioneers like Mutua Musyenda may inspire others to adopt sunflower farming, paving the way for increased local production and market expansion.
